Too little pressure and you will be scrubbing for hours; too much and you can damage wood, paint or siding. Understanding PSI helps you choose a pressure washer that cleans fast without causing harm.
PSI and GPM Explained
PSI (pounds per square inch) measures the force of the water. Higher PSI loosens tougher dirt, stains and grime.
GPM (gallons per minute) measures how much water flows. Higher GPM rinses debris away faster and covers large areas more quickly.
Large concrete areas, stubborn oil stains, paint prep
For most homeowners, a medium-duty pressure washer around 2,000–2,800 PSI is the sweet spot. It is strong enough for driveways and patios, yet versatile enough for decks and siding when you use the right nozzle and distance.
Wood Decks
Wood is softer than concrete. Use a wider nozzle, keep the wand 12 inches or more from the surface and always move with the grain.

Safe Pressure Washing Tips
Start wide and far. Begin with a wider nozzle and move closer only if needed.
Test first on a hidden area before cleaning painted or delicate surfaces.
Never point the spray at people, pets or plants.
Wear eye protection and closed shoes.
Avoid windows and electrical fixtures with high-pressure nozzles.
Use detergent first on greasy or mossy surfaces, then rinse.
